HP today announced National Geographic magazine is using HP Indigo digital printing solutions so people can order customized photographic covers of a special collector’s edition magazine called National Geographic Your Shot.

Available now, the collector’s edition publication features the best photographs from the more than 150,000 images submitted by the public to the popular Your Shot online feature, where readers can submit their photography for possible publication in National Geographic magazine.

Photography enthusiasts can order the collector’s edition online with a cover that features their own high-resolution photographic image. Consolidated Graphics, a leading North American provider of print solutions, is using its HP Indigo digital presses to produce the covers, which are then bound to copies of the special edition magazine. This project is part of Consolidated Graphics’ increasing focus on personalized digital print solutions, a reflection of the growing trend among magazine publishers.

“The outstanding visual imagery National Geographic magazine publishes makes it one of the world’s most respected sources for photographic excellence,” said Jan Riecher, vice president and general manager, Graphics Solutions Business – Americas, HP. “The magazine’s decision to use HP Indigo technology for this print-on-demand customizable cover is a significant endorsement of the photo-quality imaging and advanced productivity the presses offer.”

The National Geographic Your Shot Collector’s Edition is the first special edition from National Geographic magazine devoted entirely to reader photography. The magazine has cultivated an extensive web-based group of photography lovers through its three-year-old “Your Shot” online offering and the more recent “My Shot,” which was launched in 2008 as an active photography-based community where readers can upload their photos to take part in various interactive options, such as jigsaw puzzles.

Confidence in HP Indigo technology

“The pervasiveness of HP Indigo technology in the printing industry gave us the confidence to approach the cover customization project with HP,” said John MacKethan, director, Consumer and Member Marketing, National Geographic Society. “Knowing that we would receive a level of quality that is consistent with our magazines, HP and Consolidated Graphics helped us create a new product that enables us to engage with photography enthusiasts and general consumers who like the idea of being able to customize the cover with a unique, personal photograph.”

To create the Your Shot Collector’s Edition, editors selected 101 images from the more than 150,000 photos that have been submitted through the Your Shot Webpage since June 2006. National Geographic’s regular gravure and web offset print

Easy Photo Printing Helps You Share Family History

There are many ways to share family history. Some like to collect letters, or speak with older relatives and write down what they say. Others like to use audio recordings to create a bank of narratives of family stories. Still others simply like to collect photos and carefully place them in photo albums, with a short note or entry included.

All of these methods alone are great – they are attempts to preserve the past. But all of these methods alone still fall short of truly capturing a family’s history.

The best of all three worlds would be to have a written document, with audio recordings available, and photos included for easy browsing. Now, some might say that video accomplishes this task. However, who has time to sit through a video? Who really wants to? Videos are something like slideshows of the past. In a bygone era, people used to take photo slides of their vacations. Then, they’d invite friends and neighbors over to view their hours long presentation. Virtually no one enjoyed those sessions.

Video is much the same way. Even sites like YouTube feature videos that are extremely short – at the most three to five minutes. After that, you lose everyone’s interest.

So, if you can’t really show a video that’s much longer than five minutes and expect everyone to pay attention, how are you going to record the entire history of a family on video?

That’s why easy photo printing sites are so important when it comes to preserving memories. However, most of those only allow you to upload photos and write some text about the photos.

You can create a lovely story book or photo album complete with pictures and written words. You can have these printed, and delivered to family members who can review them in their free time, at a pace they are comfortable with. When you visit their homes, you can sit with them and – perhaps over a cup of coffee – you can look at your family’s history and reminisce to your hearts’ content.

That’s great … but you’re still only two-thirds of the way there. You still have to capture the audio.

There are very few sites that allow you to add audio to your photos. Search “easy photo sharing” or “easy photo printing” to find some.

Now, some people may not want to create audio stories. It can be difficult to get the recordings you need. However, saving some voices is better than saving none. Imagine hearing the voice of your grandfather again, telling one of your favorite stories that you remember from childhood, or perhaps giving you words of wisdom that may have been lost to memory.

Whether you decide to include audio in your family history or not, at least you know the resource is available. The most important thing is that you preserve family memories that are precious to you, and will be even more precious to your children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The Internet has really made a huge difference in how fast you can get the word out about anything and everything. That’s a wonderful thing, and one area where easy photo sharing really comes in handy is with fundraising.

As long as you have an email list that people have opted in to (given you their permission to mail), there are so many different, creative ways you can tell folks about an event. If you’ve never considered easy photo sharing as a way to spread the word, here are a few tips on how you can.

Slide shows. If you’re having a silent auction, easy photo sharing is a great way to spread the word about the items you are auctioning off. First, take photos of the items you are auctioning off, especially the ones that photograph well.

Then, go to one of the easy photo sharing websites on the Internet and upload your photos. It’s simple and the best easy photo sharing sites have tutorials. Once you have your photos uploaded, use their tools to create a slide show of the items you have for auction.

Once you have your slideshow prepared, simply use your email list to invite people to review the items for sale at your silent auction. You can ask that people on your list forward the email to their friends and relatives. This will generate some talk about your event, and get people excited about the items you have for sale.

Photo albums. If your child is active in sports, be sure to take a season’s worth of digital images of all the games, some of the practices, and social events the team holds. Then, upload your photos to an easy photo sharing site.

You can also have the kids on the team take their own digital photos, and have them sent to you. This will help make the album more personal. Once you’re photos are uploaded, use the site to create an online photo album. Creating an online album at an easy photo sharing site won’t take more than a couple of hours of your time. It can include all the fun times from the past season. Be sure to feature all the team members in the album with their own special photo.

Once you have the album created, you can send an announcement to the team telling them the album is for sale. Encourage the people on the list to let grandparents, aunts and uncles and other relatives know that the album is for sale. This will help spread the word and bring sales in from non-team members.

Have orders placed through you, and charge slightly more than what the album costs through the easy photo sharing site – this will be the profit for the team. Be sure to include shipping charges in your price, and be sure to ask for and receive prepayment. Place the orders and have the items shipped directly to the person who ordered the album. That way, you’re involvement and work is simplified.

A little imagination, combined with an easy photo sharing site, can go a long way to generating income for your fundraiser!
