Do you own a digital camera? Have you started to make the most out of it? Without really starting the features of a digital camera, one can start using his or her digital camera to take beautiful pictures because of the technology embedded into that small little device.
A digital camera can help movies like me to autofocus I do on a mountain view, or a small little beautiful flower. When I first bought my camera, the salesman was very persuasive. And I quote, all you need to do is point and click. I was instantly sold on getting that wonderful camera.
As the days and weeks go by, I began to be familiar with the digital camera and suddenly digital photography became a passion for me. I wanted to take more than just ordinary pictures! I dug through my old closet and found the manual to this digital camera and started reading it. I learned about quality, that a 300 dpi will produce a better quality than a 72 dpi resolution. If only I have learned this much earlier! I learned about shutter speeds and exposure, white balance and how to remove red eye effects… digital photography is becoming very interesting!
Do you have problem taking pictures through a window? every time I take a picture to a window, there is always a reflection on the picture. Sometimes the reflection is so small I can only is it after I transfer it onto my computer. If only I knew to stand closer to the window, I would have reduced the reflection that reflects on shiny surface of the glass.
Have you tried to take pictures in the dark? if you try to use the flash with the camera, the picture could look too bright. Especially if you use it in a jungle, you will scare away most of the animals. There is a way to use the camera to take pictures without flash in the dark. That is to increase your light exposure. You can control your shutter speed by decreasing it. By decreasing the shutter speed, you allow more light to go your camera and brighten up the dark picture.
In addition to the light present, the amount of light that is reflected from the image is then absorbed into the shutter. The longer the shutter close its lead, the high exposure and brighter the image. Have you wonder how cats can see very well in the night? Their eyes are so sensitive to light, a candle in the dark can lid up a whole room for them. It takes some practice for you and I to learn about the shutter speed. Experiment and testing is crucial to know what is the correct speed.
As digital camera is getting cheaper and cheaper these days, digital photography is being picked up by many amateur Digital photographers. The younger generation to be able to pick up on softwares in many leading pictures past digital photography is a growing hobby.

Cropping your subject correctly is an important aspect of taking a great portrait. There are different standard portrait lengths: full body, the face and upper part of the body, close up of the face, etc. How do we decide what to leave in frame and what to crop out? I am going to talk about different ways to crop a portrait to make the finished image look more professional, and more pleasing to the eye.
There are two methods to crop a photo: cropping in camera, and cropping in postproduction. The first method, cropping in camera, is the preferred method of cropping, as it takes advantage of your camera’s maximum resolution per image. As you take a picture, you decide what to leave in what to leave out by properly framing your subject. So if you want to take a picture of just your subjects face, you are just focusing on the face, not the whole body with the plan of later cropping the picture on the computer. This way your image has the original resolution that your camera recorded.
Unfortunately, sometimes this isn’t possible, and that is why we also have the second method of cropping, cropping during postproduction. Sometimes you may find yourself, shooting pictures of a very fast event at a wedding; things may be happening so quickly that you don’t have the time to properly compose the image. Examples of this might be many people fast dancing at the reception, or people jumping to catch the bouquet or garter. This is ok. Just shoot and try to capture the moment, then later you can crop your image with Photoshop or another similar photo editing program. But, as stated earlier, you lose some resolution quality to your final image.
So, now that we know the different methods of cropping, how do we crop correctly? Which parts of the body do we cut off (leave out of frame)? First, lets start with where not to crop. Never crop a human subject at the joints, i.e., do not cut off your subject at the ankles, knees, or waist. We all know the full length shot, which is the whole body of the subject with nothing cut off, the next type of portrait is the 3/4 length. This is a portrait where you have the subject’s thigh as the bottom edge of the photo, and a small space above the subject’s head as the upper edge. Next, there is the head and shoulders length portrait. The bottom edge of the photo in this portrait will be the upper chest of your subject, and again a small space above the head as the limit for the upper edge. Lastly, and most complicated, there are close ups of the face. Portraits of a subject’s face you might have seen online or in print tend to be more artistic, and therefore the rules for cropping are not as rigid. For facial close ups, I suggest you take a look at different examples, and decide which type of cropping goes best with your style of photography.

Many people have heard the word \”Photoshop\” but are not entirely sure if it is a type of camera or a place where you get your photos matted and framed. Actually, it is neither or these.
Photoshop is a photo editing software program used mainly by professional graphic artists and photographers. However, you don\’t need to be a professional anything to use and enjoy this program. Nearly everyone will agree that Photoshop is the most powerful photo editing program on the market today. One of the most basic things in photography is knowing how to compose your images. Composing a lake with a mountain in the background can be challenging enough, but what makes wedding photography a bit more complicated is that a wedding couple needs to be inserted into the frame as well. I have written four articles to help you compose your images at weddings. In these articles I will talk about choosing horizontal or vertical format, different techniques of composition, and lastly, two devices to help make your images more complex. In this first article I am going to offer some suggestions to help you choose to shoot an image horizontally or vertically.
One of the first things to think about to compose your image is whether the photo will be horizontal or vertical. These formats are also called landscape and portrait. Don’t get to hung up on these names though, I shoot plenty of good landscape shots vertically, and wedding portraits horizontally. So how do I decide which to use? To decide if I am going to shoot horizontal or vertical, I always ask myself the question “What am I gaining by shooting this subject horizontally or vertically?” To apply this question to your photography you can start by shooting one image horizontal, one vertical, when trying to frame your subject. Then look at these two images and ask yourself what is this picture gaining by having all the other stuff that isn’t the subject in frame.
Using the example above of a wedding couple with a mountain and lake, if shot horizontal and there is a tree on one side of the couple, is this tree a bonus, or is it distracting? If shooting vertical, if the sky is in the frame, is it an attractive or interesting sky, or is it all blown out? What are you gaining by having the sky in frame? Ask yourself this question critically. Remember that sometimes-empty space in the frame is a bonus.
After some time comparing these two images every time you shoot, you can start doing it mentally before you even put the viewfinder up to your eye. I see the wedding couple and what is around them and ask myself this question “What am I gaining…” and then decide to shoot vertical or horizontal. Only after I have decided, do I then start to carefully frame my subject.
I hope this has helped you how to decide whether to compose your image horizontally or vertically. In the next three articles I introduce different composition techniques as well as devices to help you compose your photos. Thanks for reading!

So, have you finally found an interest in the photography world? First let me congratulate you for your wise decision!
Photography is a fulfilling and addicting hobby where you can find so much satisfaction and enjoyment within it. It’s not strange to find photographers who have been in this world for years and even decades, just because they are so deeply attached to the beautiful art of photography. On the other hand, there are also so many people who simply love to take pictures, to keep their most precious moments memorized and accessible even years ahead.
Photography is a delicate art. Almost everybody with a camera can make a photo. They can even call themselves photographers, after several dozen of images taken. However, taking a breathtaking, lifelike photo is difficult. It’s something that you can only achieve when you have the knowledge, experience and right tools (ie. cameras, lenses, tripods, etc). There are, however, some tips that even beginners can do to produce a better image/photo using a DSLR camera. Here are the tips:
1. Proper way to hold the cameras
In order to produce good image, you need to keep a steady hand when taking picture. First: keep your right hand with around the camera’s body with index finger at the shutter and thumb at the back of camera. Don’t hold the camera too tightly or you will end up in shaking hand. Second: keep your left hand under the camera. Third: practice the grip as many times as possible! Get the feel and try taking some pictures. Analyze the result and find what the best way to hold the camera for you is. It’s recommended to get a lighter camera, like Nikon D7000 camera, for your own convenience. A bulky camera will cause you to get tired quicker and lose the steadiness factor.
2. Focus on your object
The lack of focus in photos is a problem that many beginner photographers experience. Although you can have several objects in one photo, it’s better to focus in one thing. One of the ways to do this is by either placing your object in the center of the photo or in the bottom right of your photo. Imagine you slice your screen/viewfinder into nine rectangles and put the object in the bottom right side. This kind of placement setting will emphasis the existence of your object without it filling the entire screen. It’s a good choice if you plan on taking the picture of someone in front of some building. Most cutting-edge dSLR camera, like Nikon D7000 camera, has this nine boxes mode which you can activate within the menu option.
3. Landscape vs portrait
The determination to choose landscape or portrait mode is largely influenced by the objects, situation/surrounding and your preference. However, the basic guideline is landscape mode for taking scenery images and portrait mode for taking people images. Don’t take it as a fast and hard rule! Judge the situation and condition to determine the perfect/suitable mode. Try taking a picture of the same scene with both modes so you can really tell which one works best for the current shot your taking.
